PWIA Press Conference at the PA State Capitol, May 1, 2024

PWIA is tackling the growing epidemic of fires caused by the improper disposal of rechargeable lithium batteries in recycling containers and trash bags. Rechargeable lithium batteries power so many common household items including cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, and e-cigarettes, to name a few.

PWIA has joined forces with legislative leaders and PBRA — The Rechargeable Battery Association to propose a statewide program to properly manage portable lithium-ion batteries when they are at the end of their useful life.

Rep. Joshua Siegel’s battery stewardship bill, HB 2241, passed in the PA House of Representatives in July 2024 and is under review in the PA State Senate. Urge your State Senator to support HB 2241 to take a responsible, common-sense approach to public safety and environmental stewardship. Enter your address here to find your Senator.

Pennsylvania can address the deadly fires caused by rechargeable batteries by passing HB 2241 to stop battery-related fires before they ever start. There is no time to waste!
