Environmental Stewardship

Safe, efficient collection and management of recyclables and waste materials is essential to public health and safety, protecting our environment, and ensuring the infrastructure that enables business and economic growth. Today’s landfills are highly engineered and designed to protect the environment and the communities in which they are located. Pennsylvania’s landfills are built and operated by experienced professionals. They are closely regulated and are routinely inspected by local municipalities, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

PWIA is proud of its local beautification efforts and annual collaboration with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to donate free disposal at participating landfills across the state. In 2019, 106,349 volunteers collected 6,500,695 million pounds of litter from Pennsylvania’s roads, trails, and shorelines. Over 6,057 events were held, with every county participating.
