Job Creation, Fees and Taxes

The waste and recycling industry benefits Pennsylvania in ways beyond providing the essential services of recycling and waste management. It creates jobs and family-sustaining salaries, spends money on goods and services, pays taxes and generates revenues for state and local governments. Together, the businesses involved in the collection, transport, and management of recycling and municipal solid waste have been called a “key component of the overall Pennsylvania economy.”

The waste and recycling industry in Pennsylvania is responsible for supporting 26,000 jobs and $680 million in annual employee earnings.

Overall, the industry contributes more than $4.2 billion per year to the Pennsylvania economy in jobs, salaries and spending.

The waste industry also generates roughly $250 million a year in taxes and fees to state and local governments.
